I was very
happy to see Street Fighter IV pick up some nominations
not just for "Fighting Game of the Year," but actually
for "Game of the Year" overall, and now it's actually
won
the award from the surprisingly game-savvy folks at the
San Jose Mercury News:
No other release
rejuvenated a genre more than Capcom's flagship fighting
game. It grabbed a new generation of fans and reignited
the passion of old-school gamers in the series. The huge
turnout at Evo Championship Series 2009, the preeminent
U.S. fighting game tournament, is proof of that. The
return to the classic gameplay, along with some new
tweaks and a great online mode, made "Street Fighter IV"
the game I played and loved the most this
year.
It's nice to be
nominated, but nicer to win, and an EVO shoutout to
boot! Thanks guys!

Gieson Cacho, video game columnist from the San
Jose Mercury news, recently posted
an article on his experiences playing with PSP
fighters Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny and our very own
Fate/Unlimited Codes. He pits the two of them against
each other, comparing fighting systems, game modes, and
art:
Fate/Unlimited Codes arrives like a
revelation. To put in Street Fighter II terms, if Broken
Destiny hits players like a strong to the chest, then
Codes will surprise them like a fierce
to the face. Eighting does a great job porting this PS2
game to the PSP.
As far as
gameplay goes, the system is deep...it's intricate, but
it's not as overwhelming as the encyclopedic array of
moves players have to learn in Broken
Destiny.
and
in the end, he ultimately chooses the
winner:
What matters most is the fighting
system and modes, and in that department,
[Fate/Unlimited] Codes is simply a knock
out.
Fate/Unlimited
Codes is available now for the PSP on the PSN
store!

Two
separate looks at Fate/Unlimited Codes
today:
IGN
has a great new character combo video that shows off some
of the moves possible in the game (if you're
good). There are a few other videos and some
art and screens there, too.
Gieson
has a nice preview up on Mercury News.com
I've spent a little bit of time with
Fate/Unlimited Codes, but in that time, I've really grown
to like the game. It's hard to pull off a fighting game
on the PSP, but Fate works well and it's one of the
better looking PSP titles I've seen. This will be a
perfect title to fall back on when Monster Hunter Freedom
Unite is making you crazy (TIGREX BASTICH!!1). Plus, it's
only available from the PlayStation Network Store, so
it's cheaper than most PSP titles ($29.99) and you can
pick it up whenever you like without having to leave your
warm, moist gaming cavern.

Turns out that Contra Costa Times writer Gieson
Cacho is a big fan of the Ace Attorney
series. Not only did he get a chance to play Ace Attorney
Investigations during the show, but he also took
advantage of Eshiro-san's appearance at Comic-con to
grill him. Check
out Gieson's reactions to the new game (which we showed
in English for the first time at the Con)
here.
(Note: Doremon is
not actually in Ace Attorney
Investigations, I just couldn't resist using
this image)
