I was very
happy to see Street Fighter IV pick up some nominations
not just for "Fighting Game of the Year," but actually
for "Game of the Year" overall, and now it's actually
won
the award from the surprisingly game-savvy folks at the
San Jose Mercury News:
No other release
rejuvenated a genre more than Capcom's flagship fighting
game. It grabbed a new generation of fans and reignited
the passion of old-school gamers in the series. The huge
turnout at Evo Championship Series 2009, the preeminent
U.S. fighting game tournament, is proof of that. The
return to the classic gameplay, along with some new
tweaks and a great online mode, made "Street Fighter IV"
the game I played and loved the most this
year.
It's nice to be
nominated, but nicer to win, and an EVO shoutout to
boot! Thanks guys!

Metacritic just released their best
reviewed lists for 2009 and coming in at #1 for
the best reviewed game on the PC is Street
Fighter IV! SF IV also clocks in at #3 for the
PS3 (94 Metacritic) and #2 on the Xbox 360
(93)!
Overall, for all platforms
combined, Street Fighter IV for the PS3 comes in at
number 3 (#7 on the 360), just behind Modern Warfare 2
and Uncharted 2.
Congrats to the
team for making such an amazing game!
First
off there's of course the Spike Video Game Awards, where
our own Street
Fighter IV has been nominated for fighting game of the
year.
SFIV is
more like game of the year for me, but hopefully the fact
that it's even MORE fun than when it first came out, has
almost single-handedly put fighting games back on the
world's radar, and has produced the strongest tournament
scene in the world will help everyone else agree, no
matter how much they like giant pandas with clown wigs
:)

All of that
brings us to this fun contest from
Shoryuken: the best fighting game
match of the year! There was so much amazing
stuff this year it's hard to choose one overall, but
there were a TON of amazing EVO Finals matches, crowd-thrilling
5on5 Sakura action, and of course this
one from the GameStop/Capcom/EVO SFIV
exhibition (if you can believe it, I got flak
for even inviting Daigo to this event--people said he was
washed up!).

So
Street Fighter IV has been kind of a big deal.
Aside from scoring stellar
reviews, and offering unmatched replay value,
Street Fighter IV has also given us some incredible
moments.

It's about a game you can pour yourself into,
and in exchange you can find some button-mashy fun with
friends, or go further into true emotional
highs, devastating lows, and membership in a
decades-long tradition of international warriors--part of
something bigger than us all. In short, SFIV is
about passion.

In
a surprise to very few, SFIV has been nominated for
"Fighting
Game of the Year." That's great, but
we need your help to win. Head over to the
Spike's
Video Game Awards page and vote for the game
that reignited a genre.
Vote early, vote often, and most
importantly--vote
SFIV!
PS- hugs to
everyone shouting out for SFIV as overall game
of the year.

FLOCK! takes home the 2009 Scottish
BAFTA for "Game of the Year" in the first year
games have ever been included in the award
categories.
FLOCK! producer Robby Zinchak
at right accepting the award (with Creative
Director Geoff Gunning), which in true Scottish tradition
also includes a custom bottle of whiskey.

More details here,
or if you're one of those award show people, you can
watch the entire ceremony here.
Congrats to everyone who worked on this, and if you
missed it, be sure to check it out on XBLA, PSN, and
PC.

As we all
huddle up for our amazing Comic-Con, I'm taking a quick
break for this public service announcement.

What a honor:
Mega Man 9, the little 8-bit game that could, cleaned up Nintendo Power's WiiWare awards, beating out the likes of
World of Goo, Tetris Party, Lost Winds, and many more "AAA" WiiWare titles:
"
The WiiWare service had a great start, with a steady output of quality releases that included some of the year’s best games. Mega Man 9 tops them all because, in addition to its fun and challenging gameplay, the title is a fantastic example of the breadth of game styles made possible by direct download– the game would have been considered too risky to ever sell in stores. Here’s hoping more creative ideas are given a chance thanks to Mega Man 9’s success."
But wait! The acclaim doesn't stop there! Mega Man 9 was also deemed the "best shooter/action game" of the year and nominated for "overall game of the year."
It's definitely great to see MM9 getting the recognition is deserved.

If
you aren't keyed into the Japanese arcade scene, Arcadia
Magazine is like the New York Times of arcade
games-it's THE place to go in Japan for amazingly
in-depth and expert coverage of a large amount of titles
(and no, I don't write for them anymore!). They
also sponsor the awesome Super Battle
Opera tournament, so it's safe to say that
these guys know what's up.
SFIV wasn't really in the running for any Game of
the Year awards in the West, since it's "merely" an
arcade game right now, but in the one place on earth
where the game is in wide distribution, it's blowing
everybody away.
Street
Fighter IV won:
-GAME OF THE
YEAR
-Best
Graphics
-Best Production
-Best
Character (Ryu)
I'm
not sure a single game has ever been
so dominant.
And just in case you
thought SFIV was only popular with the Arcadia editors,
here is where I tell you it also won the write-in
Reader's Choice voting for best game
of the year. Beastly!
Thanks MarkMan
and Reno
for the translations!

Proving once again that old
school doesn't mean outdated, the folks at IGN have just
elected Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix
as.........drumroll
please.....................
the BEST FIGHTING GAME OF
2008!!!!!

additional informaiton, including Okami for Wii
being nominated for best use of Wiimote!
Here are Capcom, we'd
like to thank all of the people that worked so hard in
creating and promoting the game. But most of
all, we'd like to thank the fans. You guys are
what keep Street Fighter the powerhouse that it still is.
Thanks for everything guys! Because
of you we're pushing to make Street Fighter the premier
name in fighting games for another 20
years.
